Sir,
With reference to Mr. Read's letter of the 16th August last (37557/1916), I am directed to say that only one candidate, Miss E. Badenoch, presented herself for the vacant post of Assistant Mistress in the Government School at Hong Kong and that after careful consideration and interview it did not appear to the Committee of Selection that her qualifications were adequate for the duties. The Committee therefore regret that they are unable to make any recommendation.
They understand however that Miss Badenoch is leaving for Hong Kong next week, for the purpose of getting married, and that she is anxious to obtain teaching work in the Colony. They consider that she would make a good teacher in a school of a lower standard, and they suggest that the attention of the Colonial Government might be called to her presence in the Colony, in case an opportunity should arise for her employment.
Miss Henderson and Miss Parkes, mentioned in the Governor's letter of the 27th June 1916, did not apply for the post.
